Digital Diplomacy: The Case of Deepfakes in Foreign Policy and Implications for the UAE
With the integration of digitization in diplomacy, digital platforms have redefined diplomacy, making it more accessible and transparent. They are often used as a tool to implement foreign policy objectives, facilitating direct communication between governments and civil society, and bypassing traditional media. However, these digital platforms have often been misused, particularly in relation to content generated by artificial intelligence. Disinformation campaigns have on many occasions imposed threats to international and diplomatic relations. This Insight discusses the challenges posed by the technological advances in AI within the context of international relations and diplomacy. Specifically, it examines how the misuse of AI-generated synthetic media, or deepfakes, can undermine trust and credibility, increase security risks, and escalate geopolitical tensions.
