Recalibrating International Law : From Exclusive to Inclusive?

In an era of limited global cooperation, international law is at risk of becoming a marginal enterprise in international affairs. The Insight examines how it would be possible to reinstate an international legal order subject to a minimum set of legal standards. At the minimum, the rules-based international order requires a substantial revision to accommodate other powers’ visions of order and restore faith the international legal system. Such a shift would require holding on to fundamental principles, including the UN Charter and other like-minded international standards, as well as developing guiding principles around issues vital to humanity’s future and across diverse areas such as climate change, biodiversity, long-term peace, artificial intelligence, and human rights. The reliance on fundamental principles and other international standards might offer the best path to a revised international legal order.
