Climate, Biodiversity and Food Security Risks: Global Perspectives and Solutions for the UAE
This working paper examines the complex relationship between climate, biodiversity and food security, with a focus on the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It analyses the impacts of current geopolitical and environmental challenges on the UAE’s agricultural trade and looks at possible implications of continued climate change and biodiversity loss for future yields. It also reviews international initiatives related to sustainable trade, such as the new trade agreement between New Zealand, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Iceland on Climate Change, Trade and Sustainability (ACCTS) or BRICS’s new Laboratory on Trade, Climate Change and Sustainable Development, and proposes policy options for the UAE to promote sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural trade. The paper recommends the integration of trade into food security, climate, and biodiversity policies to build long-term resilience.
