Gulf-Pakistan Relations-From Ideological Affinity to the Era of Pragmatism

This insight examines the historically close ties between Pakistan and the Gulf countries. The relationship has been defined by the presence of a large Pakistani workforce, strong military and intelligence cooperation and shared membership of the Islamic community. As Pakistan struggles to come to terms with expanded economic and political ties with India, this Insight argues that the Gulf countries’ relationship with Pakistan and India are not a zero-sum game. The challenge for Pakistan is to reconcile with India’s rise, accept the expanding Gulf-India ties as an economic reality, and still maintain Pakistan’s unique relationship with the Gulf countries by tapping into their priorities.
