Dr. György Busztin
Adjunct Professor
György Busztin is senior researcher at Khayrion, an independent Central European think tank. He was Diplomat in Residence at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy between June 2024 and February 2025. Before joining the Academy, he was visiting research professor at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore, July 2021 to August 2023. His research area was the diffusion of ideas from the Arabian Peninsula to Southeast Asia.
A careere diplomat and an academic, he served between 2001 and 2011 as Hungary’s ambassador to Indonesia and subsequently to Iran. In 2011 he was appointed Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) responsible for the political, analytical, electoral and constitutional support components of the mission.
He served at the level of Assistant Secretary-General until October 2017. He has subsequently worked as Senior Regional Advisor to the Helsinki based Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation.
During his diplomatic career, Dr. Busztin also served in Egypt, Libya, and Afghanistan. Dr. Busztin holds a degree in Arabic history from Damascus University, Syria and a Doctorate in Arabic Language and Semitic Philology from Lorand Eotvos University in Hungary.
He speaks English, Arabic, French, Farsi (Persian), Malay and Russian. He believes strongly in political and intercultural dialogue and has engaged with leading politicians, intellectuals, religious leaders and representatives of civil society.
