1. Job Objective

The mission of Anwar Gargash  Diplomatic Academy (AGDA) is to build the capabilities required to meet the objectives of the UAE’s foreign policy, by providing accredited academic programmes, the highest standards of executive training, and furthering the understanding of diplomacy and international relations, through insightful thought leadership and impactful research and analysis.

The AGDA is looking to further strengthen its thought leadership role by recruiting Senior Research Fellows and Research Fellows who can further the mission of the Research Department to: contribute to domestic and international debates on issues relevant to the UAE’s foreign policy and diplomacy; act as an impactful source of analysis for the UAE government; and help build student diplomats’ research and analytical capabilities.

The AGDA will give priority to candidates with one or more of the following areas of specialisation:

  • Sustainable Development
  • The practice of diplomacy (including pedagogy of diplomacy and new opportunities, such as digital diplomacy)
  • Contemporary issues in the UAE foreign policy (e.g. Gulf-Africa relations, MENA region security issues)

Consideration will also be given to candidates with a strong background in economics, as this could provide valuable support to a number of the AGDA’s research programmes.

2. Key Responsibilities/Duties


Managing research programme:

  • Identify and manage a realistic, prioritised, impactful programme of research, designed to engage students, influence the UAE policy makers, and stimulate wider international debate
  • Identify and engage possible partners to collaborate on aspects of the research agenda, including commissioning external experts to write papers
  • Initiate and organise events related to the research programme, including round-table discussions, seminars and workshops
  • Build working relations with relevant government and non-government experts in the UAE and abroad who are working on these issues

Producing and disseminating research:

  • Conduct his/her own research
  • Produce research papers and develop multimedia formats for communicating the results of research, including infographics, op-eds, video and other formats
  • Provide expert advisory services for the government of the UAE
  • Produce occasional short issue briefs for the AGDA to distribute
  • Present research in external forums, including conferences and other events, both in the UAE and overseas


  • Teach and develop at least one graduate course, most likely in the MA in International Relations and Diplomacy
  • Prepare and deliver executive training courses and seminars for members of the diplomatic service and other relevant government entities
  • Support preparations for the UAE’s participation in the UN Security Council, as an elected member
  • Advise the AGDA students on academic matters, including possibly supervising theses


  • Contribute to the wider strategic planning of the Research and Analysis Department
  • Contribute to wider operations and success of the  AGDA, including participating in relevant committees
  • Participate in the AGDA's wider social and intellectual activities

3. Job Specification

Senior Research Fellow

  • Candidates for Senior Research Fellow should hold a Doctorate and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
  • Candidates without a PhD may be considered if they have held a senior position in a relevant professional field

Research Fellow

  • Candidates for Research Fellow should hold a Doctorate and a minimum of five years of relevant experience
  • Candidates without a PhD may be considered if they have held a mid-ranking position in a relevant professional field

Competences for both Senior Research Fellows and Research Fellows

  • Demonstrable aptitude for research and writing and commitment to high standards of scholarship
  • Demonstrable teaching experience and evidence of strong pedagogical skills
  • Evidence of relevant expertise and willingness to broaden this expertise to cover a wider set of issues relevant to UAE foreign policy
  • Excellent written English. Fluency in written and spoken Arabic is highly desirable
  • Strong, clear, and effective written and oral communication skills, including an understanding of how to convey information and ideas to senior government officials, as well as to students
  • An innovative approach to analysing and communicating information and ideas for maximum impact
  • Affinity with the foreign policy goals of the UAE
  • Ability to work in an environment dealing with sensitive information
  • Flexibility, and willingness to adapt to evolving needs and priorities
  • An appreciation for the mission and culture of the Academy
  • Strong team player, with a keen interest in collaborating to ensure the success of the AGDA
